The 7-day Rongai Route offers a peaceful ascent with gentle slopes and excellent acclimatization. Approaching from the northern side, trekkers enjoy open landscapes, views of Mawenzi Peak, and a scenic traverse of the high-altitude saddle. The added day at Mawenzi Tarn greatly increases comfort and success on summit night. This is an ideal route for beginners and those who prefer a slow, steady ascent.

Day 1: Nalemoru Gate to Simba Camp

Trek through forest and farmland toward Simba Camp, enjoying a quiet and gentle start to your climb.


Day 2: Simba Camp to Second Cave

Ascend gradually through moorland to reach Second Cave with panoramic views.


Day 3: Second Cave to Kikelewa Camp

Continue to the secluded Kikelewa Valley and enjoy the dramatic high-altitude landscape.


Day 4: Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn

Climb to Mawenzi Tarn, a spectacular lake nestled beneath Mawenzi’s sharp peak.


Day 5: Acclimatization Day at Mawenzi Tarn

Spend the day exploring the surroundings on short hikes. This additional day greatly improves acclimatization and summit success.


Day 6: Mawenzi Tarn to Kibo Hut

Trek across the expansive saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo to reach Kibo Hut for your summit briefing.


Day 7: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak, Descend to Marangu Gate

Summit overnight, reach Uhuru Peak at sunrise, and descend all the way to Marangu Gate for exit formalities.
